The Naval Museum
of Manitoba is proud to bring you this collection of Naval
Air photographs.
Hopefully these photos will stir
the memory of Canadian aircraft roaring off pitching
decks and lonely airmen patrolling for enemy subs over
cold coastal waters.
Enjoy!
DND Photos of Pre-1970 Canadian Naval Air Assets. All photos
are in Black and White. Most are very stunning.
Hawker Sea
Fury. A total of 75 Sea Furies served with the Royal
Canadian Navy(R.C.N.) between 1948 and 1956. All flew from
the Aircraft Carrier HMCS MAGNIFICENT in 871 Squadron. The
Sea Fury was the last piston engined fighter to be used
by the Navy, and one of the best of it's type, showing itself
on many occasions to be superior to the more up-to-date
enemy jets of the Korean conflict.
McDonnell
F2H-3 Banshee. One of 39 purchased from the U.S. Navy
in 1955 by Canada to equip two seaborne fighter squadrons
on the Aircraft Carrier H.M.C.S. BONAVENTURE.
Piasecki HUP.
The VU-33 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Navy used three
Piasecki HUP-3 helicopters between 1954 and 1964.
Sikorsky H04S.
Came into use with the RCN in 1952 as an ASW platform. Top
speed was 112kts carrying up to one torpedo.
Supermarine
Seafire XV. The Supermarine Seafire was a derivative
of the famous Spitfire fighter plane. Developed for carrier
use, the Seafire incorporated changes such as a tail hook,
attachments for catapult use, and on later variants, folding
wings.
The following photos were taken at the Air
Park at CFB Shearwater, across the harbour from the HMC Dockyard
in Halifax, NS. All photos are colour. Photos by Brian Mutcher.
